“A Year in the Life: Healing Africa” is a documentary film portraying a year in the life of health providers in sub-Saharan Africa. The area is particularly hard-hit by HIV/AIDS, but the characters portrayed also confront a host of other issues, from extreme poverty to malaria to unclean water to just plain fatigue and frustration. The film is meant to address the neglected but critical problem of brain drain and the paucity of human resources; no amount of donor funds, however great, will have an impact on HIV and other diseases if there is no one to provide the care. By understanding the plight of health care workers in the developing world, and witnessing their unique solutions, the problem and the direction for action will come to light.
